Sipi Falls is one of Uganda’s most iconic natural attractions, located on the foothills of Mount Elgon near the town of Kapchorwa in Eastern Uganda. It is a series of three stunning waterfalls along the Sipi River, each cascading at different heights through cliffs and lush green landscapes, creating a dramatic and photogenic setting.
The tallest of the three, dropping approximately 100 meters locally called (Kaptogolo Falls) this waterfall is the most visited and photographed. Its mist creates a cool, refreshing atmosphere, and the surrounding cliffs make it a breathtaking sight. Second (Middle) Waterfall with 65m locally called (Chepkui waterfalls or Munarya waterfalls) found at 1789m, this is the smallest of the three but offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Karamoja plains around the rapid falls. The hike to this waterfall passes through villages, coffee farms, and scenic landscapes.  Third (Upper) Waterfall locally called (Ngasire Waterfalls or Chebukoch) is 2 kms away from Mount Elgon National Park boundary. Known for its picturesque surroundings and slightly hidden location, this fall is accessible by a moderate hike. It offers a quieter experience and is perfect for those who enjoy exploring off the main trail and lastly, A guided hike through all three waterfalls is one of the highlights of a trip to Sipi, taking 3–4 hours depending on pace. Along the way, visitors encounter caves, viewpoints, and suspension bridges, while interacting with friendly locals.

Aside from the waterfalls, Sipi is also famous for its Arabica coffee farms, grown on the fertile volcanic soils of Mount Elgon. Visitors can participate in a coffee tour to learn about the entire coffee-making process from picking and washing to roasting, brewing and taste a fresh cup straight from the farm.

Sipi’s high altitude and cool climate make it a perfect retreat for hikers, nature lovers, and adventure seekers. The area also offers optional activities such as abseiling down the main waterfall, rock climbing, nature walks, and scenic sunset viewpoints overlooking the Rift Valley.

Nyero Rock Paintings.

Nyero Rock Paintings are one of Uganda’s most significant and well-preserved archaeological and cultural heritage sites, located in Kumi District in eastern Uganda. This UNESCO-listed site consists of a series of rock shelters with ancient pictographs (paintings on rock) that date back more than 3,000 years and are attributed to early hunter-gatherer communities, likely the Batwa or Twa pygmies who once inhabited the region.

The paintings are spread across three main rock shelters (Nyero 1, Nyero 2, and Nyero 3), each with unique artwork and historical significance:

  • Nyero 1: The smallest shelter, featuring geometric paintings made of concentric circles and shapes in red pigment, believed to have symbolic or spiritual meaning.
  • Nyero 2: The largest and most impressive shelter, with a massive overhanging rock that serves as a natural canopy. This site features an array of red and white paintings depicting concentric circles, ladder-like patterns, and other abstract designs.
  • Nyero 3: A smaller cave with fewer paintings, but with a serene setting that provides a perfect spot to understand the lifestyle and rituals of the early inhabitants.

Visiting Nyero Rock Paintings is like stepping back in time. Local guides share fascinating insights about the artwork, how the pigments were made from natural materials, and the possible meanings behind the symbols, which are believed to have been used in religious or ceremonial activities.
