Mount Elgon, is an ancient, extinct volcano on the border of Uganda and then Kenya, and the mountain offers a truly unique and then rewarding hiking adventure. Multi-Day Hikes and then Different Trails.

Expeditions on Mount Elgon are usually multi-day trips that gives you enough time to truly explore the mountain’s beauty. Most hikes last between 3 to 6 days, depending on the path you choose and how much time you have for the hiking safari.

There are three main trails that takes you to Mount Elgon and then each of the trail offers a different experience;

The Sasa Trail (also called Buddukiro), This is often considered as the shortest route to reach the summit, its known for being the direct but can be quite steep in the parts, making it challenging, it’s a good choice if you have less time but ate ready for the tough climb, Along this trail, you might see the cultural sites and then the dense bamboo forests that makes you safari amazing and then wonderful.

The Piswa Trail (also called Kapkwata), this is the route that is generally longer and then more gentle, making it the best for hikes who prefer a steadier climb. It takes about 6 days for a round trip. Wagagai peak, whch stands at 4,321 meters (14, 178 feet) above the seal level. Reaching Wagagai Peak gives you a strong feeling of accomplishment and it offers the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Another peak often included in the longer treks.

Jackson peak, at 4,165 meters (13,665 feet). The mountain’s gentle slopes and then the wide outline make the climb less technical than some other high mountains, but still very rewarding.

Required fitness of your expedition.

While Mount Elgon is considered less strenuous and technical than mountains like the Rwenzoris, its still requires a good level of the physical fitness;

Moderate challenge; the hikes are generally described as the moderately challenging. This means you should be able to walk for the several hours each day, sometimes on uneven or steep paths.

Who can hike, even the children over 10 years old and older people can take part in Mount Elgon trekking, as long as they have the reasonable fitness level.

Support system, you will be supported by the team of the guides, porters and then the cooks which helps make the trek manageable. Porters can carry your main backpack, leaving you with just a small daypack for the essentials.

Preparation, it’s a good idea to do some regular walking or hiking before your Uganda safari to get your body ready.

Packing essentials, remember to pack light but efficiently, key items include the sturdy and comfortable hiking boost (especially for the difficult terrain) a water bottle to stay hydrated, and light clothes. A head torch, sunglasses, sunscreen and a rain jacket are also very important during this safari.
